The U12 game started immediately after the U11 game on Field 3. It had started to rain which would be our weather condition for the rest of the weekend. With temperatures in the low 60′s, it was perfect footy weather. The u12 boys have two start modes: – completely flat with little go juice, or wide open with no mercy. Today it was mode b. Hunter started the scoring in the 9th minute. All week there has been talk of one player or another being “the secret weapon”. And starting in the 12th minute, we found out who that was. Alex was game on and scored in the 12th, the 13th, the 14th and the 16th minute – 4 goals in just over 4 minutes. And the possession and movement of the ball was almost the same in all 4 goals. Down the left from the back to Dylan, across the field through Trenton and or Hunter, wide to Alex cutting in on the right and great shots to beat the keeper. We Futura scored in the 24th minute and we went into half leading 5 to1. 305 had 22 shots on goal to Futura’s 2.
In the second half, we went to our 3-2-2 and Andrew in goal to give us some more work on this new formation. In the 13th minute, Hunter scored his second. In the 15th Riley put us up 7 to 1. And Dylan who was having a terrific day down the left, scored with an amazing finish to end the scoring 8 to 1. In the second half 305 had 14 shots to Futura’s 2. A terrific start to the tournament and a tremendous team effort.

U11 kicked off the Tournament in the Woods at Field 3 on a cool and overcast Saturday morning with a 9:30 game time. Camp 305 Spin was setup just off field 3 as we had 4 games to play on field 3 with U11 and U12.
We took the lead in the 9th minute with a great goal from Max. The play had been wide open with opportunities at both ends and Max was able to complete a good run of possession with a great finish. Then right before half, Rojos tied things up and we went into half tied 1 to 1. In the first half 305 had 8 shots on goal to Rojos 6 shots.
In the second half, the game continued to be end to end with both teams having some good chances. It looked like the game might end tied at 1 a piece, but Rojos finally scored in the 20th. The 305 boys kept working the ball around and creating chances but just couldn’t find the equalizer. In the last minute of play, Riley took the corner kick and Rojos cleared to the top of the box to Jesus who hit a rocket shot into the net as time ended. What a great finish and a much deserved tie.

It was a 1:50 start at United after what had to be the longest walk from Parking Lot to field in the KC Metro. WMSL is having a reall tough time managing their fields and almost all the upper fields are out of service. We were set to play United for the second time in two days. We had not had time to practice against their corner, but we discussed some options.
The game kicked off with a hot sun and temperatures in the 80′s. United had 3 corner kicks midway through the half and we put in two own goals. United went up 3 to 0 on a breakaway that we setup with an errant pass. So after a pretty even first 13 minutes of the half, in 3 minutes, we were down 3 to 0. The boys kept working but we just were not getting into the box with anything to really test their keeper. We ended the half down by 3.
In the second half, we faced an uphill battle (both in scoreline and the pitch of the field). The boys came out working hard and we started to find our rhythm. We ended up giving away two goals on poor defensive mistakes, but in the 22, on a great run of play, Daniel shot one hard enough to scoot under the keeper and we had our first goal of the season. The boys had a really good second half and once again showed their team character, working together, supporting one another and keeping themselves in the game.
We had 7 corner kicks, all ended up in the box for the taking, but no one attacking to put the ball into the net. 2 of the goals we gave up were own goals and 2 were a result of our bad habit of diving in instead of playing good technical defense. These are all things we can work on as we prepare this week for the tournament. The boys have adapted really well as a team to our 3-2-2 and the number of times we brought the ball out of the back and played our width from this formation, was really impressive.
We definitely had some bright spots including Landon showing good confidence in his defensive and attacking skills and Trey opening up the width on the attack. All the way around, all the boys gave their best.  And thanks to all the parents for being such great supporters of the team. The boys walked off the f ield down 5 to 1, but the parents made the boys feel like they had won. A great effort against a really good team. That round ball doesn’t always go the way you want it and to work hard for two halves and give your best for 60 minutes is what it is all about.

U12 was prepared for their second game of the season after the poor start opening weekend. This time at LSSA field 16, which for the first time was not a wind tunnel. A beautiful morning for an 11am start.
The first half was pretty even as we worked out of our normal 2-3-2. Hunter got through their backline and had a lovely touch around the goalie to put us up 1 to 0 in the 4th minute. The half was pretty even with KC Select equalizing in the 21st minute and we went into half tied 1 to 1. We had just edged them in shots 8 to 6.
In the second half, we moved Riley into goal to give us some time to work on our new formation, a 3-2-2. Not sure if it was the change, or we were just asleep at the wheel, but Select kicked off, sent the ball down the side, ran through our defense and pounded the ball into the back of the net. We have seen this before where we start with our feet in concrete boots. This quick goal seemed to wake us up and a minute later, Hunter once again found his way though the back line and beat the goalie on another 1 on 1. So just a few minutes into the half and we are at 2 to 2. Two minutes later, Hunter completed his hat trick with another through ball putting him on goal and a nice finish. In the 10th minute, Hunter ran his tally to four goals and put us up 4 to 2. Unfortunately, we were too busy patting ourselves on the back and Select kicked off and ran through us and scored again. This was their second goal that was probably offsides, but that is part of the game.
We had switched back to our 2-3-2 as Select had gone to a 4-1-2 to try to shut us down. In the 15th, we had some really nice team play and Lolo had a great finish to put us up 5 to 3. This goal was probably our only team goal of the game. Both teams battled hard as the sun beat down and both teams were wearing down a bit. In the 21st minute, Select scored again to make the score 5 to 4. Hunter scored his 5th goal of the game in the 22nd minute, followed 3 minutes later by a goal from Trenton Willis putting us up 7 to 4 with 5 minutes to go. Select scored one more in the 29th making the final score, 7 to 5.
A great win for the boys, as we outshot Select, 15 to 5 in the second half. We are still working on coming together as a team. 6 of the goals were individual efforts taking the ball all the way to the goal. An important part of the game and an exhibition of great individual skill. No doubt. But if we are going to have continued succes, we need to improve our team play, possession and communication. The good news is, the boys have rekindled the fire and fought to the end to make sure they stayed on top. Now back to the training pitch to get ready for the tournament.

A perfect morning to play soccer as U11 kicked off against United on RSC field 12. United is a team that we like to play as they are well coached and have a really good group of players. We had been working hard on team play, communication and passing the ball around. And of course, pressuring the ball.
The first half was pretty even with us going in tied 0 to 0 at half. United was killing us on corners with the introduction of putting a couple players on the keeper. Not sure that is the most appropriate tactic at this age, but IÂ guess if it works. We utilized our short corner kick pretty effectively and it seems a bit more like soccer than just trying to bumble a ball into the net on a corner. We just don’t have any players that have figured out you have to attack the ball to score on a corner. So once again, a lot of balls dropping in front of the goal, but no one getting to it.
The second half was more of the same. The team looked really good with working the ball out of the back. Moving the ball wide. Crosses into the middle. Good pressure all over the field. It was the same mistakes we have made in the past that let us down – diving in, sticking a foot in, turning our backs, poor first touch, bad pass. But we are improving. The game ended 0 to 0 and you could not have asked for a better effort from the boys. Great way to start the season.
