    Oct 30 U11 Muleskinner Game 2

    October 31st, 2010

Game 2 was on field 1 and after a great afternoon hanging at camp 305, we moved up to the south end of Franke Fields for our game against Shawnee Metro Elite. To stay in the tournament, we needed a win. The boys were in great spirits despite the earlier loss and were ready to play.

We took the lead in the 8th minute off a beautiful cross from Hunter that Dylan latched onto and buried into the back of the net. Both teams were working hard all over the pitch, but 305 was getting the majority of the chances. But against the run of play, Elite scored to draw the game level at 1 each. With five minutes to go in the half, Hunter looked like he might cross again from the wide right, but instead took the shot beating the goalie from a tough angle putting us up 2 to 1 going into half.

At halftime we discussed that this game was there for the  boys to win or lose. It was up to them. No more practices, no more training, coach could only sit and watch. Elite came out also knowing they needed to win and scored in the first minute of the 2nd half to tie things up 2 to 2. This woke the boys up and the game picked up with both teams fighting for a go ahead goal. We had some great chances and the boys started to take control of the game. In the 17th, Hunter put us up 3 to 2. But again, the boys let down and Elite took advantage and tied the game 3 to 3.

Colby was doing a great job in goal keeping us in the  game and we had all U11 players on the field. I told the boys on the bench, I was going to let the boys on the field figure this out for themselves. They had to reach down and up their bootstraps and do this themselves. I found a seat and let the boys work. And work they did. They become more organized, found their shape and turned up our big 3 – Pace, Pressure, Possession. 7 players on the field came together and were united in their effort. And in the 25th minute, a series of passes from back to front found Dylan out wide and he put home what would be the game winner.

Some ups and downs, yes, but when it counted, the boys pulled it together and put in the effort to win the game. Well done, boys. Well done. This sets up an exciting game on Sunday with BVSC with the winner going to the final.

    Oct 30 U11 Muleskinner Game 1

    October 31st, 2010

Our first game of the tournament was at Franke Fields at 1:30 vs SSC Fury. The day was perfect with temperatures in the low 70′s and bluebird skies. We knew the quality of Fury and that they would bring the game to us. And they did.

We were down 5 to 0 at half, but the boys went back out in the 2nd half with our objective being to score. I didn’t care how many goals we would give up, just wanted our boys to find the net. And they did just that. In the 22nd minute, Alex coming from his wide right got on a nice pass from Trenton and Blasted the ball past the goalie. Then two minutes later, Riley got on a shot from top of the box and put it through the goalies legs for our 2nd goal.

In the first half, Rush just ran circles around us and the boys learned that if you walked or didn’t distribute the ball quickly, they would shut us down. Lots of passes to space and strong individual skills showed us where we are at and where we can  be. I am proud of the boys for continuing to work hard in the second half and not getting shut out. And hats off to Riley for putting in a strong shift in center mid and allowing us to finally close down the middle. Once we stopped that leak, we were able to get back into our game.

    Oct 30 U10 v United 4 to 3

    October 31st, 2010

It was a perfect fall morning for our last game of the season. We had enjoyed a very dry mild fall and were looking forward to our rematch with United from the first game of the season that had ended in a 3-3 draw.

United had come to play and found the back of the net in the 2nd minute of play to go up 0 to 1. Our boys picked it up and 2 minute later, Riley brought us level on a through ball from Max. In  the 10th minute, Riley sent a corner into the near post and Trey got a hold of it and finished nicely in a crowd. We had worked hard on corners on Thursday and it was great to see the boys put this one away. We went into half leading 2 to 1.

In the 2nd half, United once again started off the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute. And just like in the first half, this motivated the boys to step up. Working the ball from the back, the boys moved the ball up the field finding Riley who then threaded a through ball to Landon. Landon beat his man and then finished with a strong shot into the back of the net putting us back on top 3 to 2 in the 6th minute of the half.

Both teams had good chances at both ends and it was a fast paced fluid game. With five minutes to go in the half, Riley took a shot from distance towards the far post and when the goalie came out the ball hit the ground and reversed back towards the other post beating the goalie. What a crazy goal putting us up 4 to 2. United kept coming and  with two minutes to go brought the game within 1. It was an exciting finish and the boys were able to hold on to their lead and win 4 to 3.

U10 finished the season strong, working as a team. It is great to see another win with multiple players scoring goals. We have a great core group for the spring and these players are working and training so well together. It may have been our last game this fall, but I am already excited about getting started preparing for spring. Thanks, boys – I really appreciate your efforts and the way you have grown this season. We all learned a lot together and today we reaped those rewards.

    Oct 24 U11 v RPSC Spartans

    October 25th, 2010

Wow -what a beautiful day after all the unsettled weather of the weekend. Still windy, but the sun came out and everyone was ready to play. It had been a long soccer weekend with the games on Saturday and the late night at the KC Wizards game including player autographs.

We got the ball and the wind and at the opening whistle, the boys raced into action. The first half was a good 30 minutes of great pace, lots of possession and pressure all over the park. We were moving the ball well across the width of the pitch and making runs down the touchline with nice crosses in. Trenton Willis working out of the middle finished a nice run into the box with an excellent shot past the goalie and into the back of the net to put us up 1 to 0.

We had plenty of chances and then Dylan Hayden scored his second goal in two days with a strong challenge in the goal mouth to bounce the ball past the keeper. We went into half leading 2 to 0. You could feel the energy and excitement of the boys as they were having a good time and pleased with their efforts.

After a little “duck sauce” at half time, we were back onto the pitch for more of the same. Spartans picked up their game considerably but our boys were determined to put in another solid 30 minutes. The boys kept setting up opporunities and Hunter, Alex and Trenton were pounding the right side with balls down the line and 1 and 2 touch passes. Crosses were raining into the box.

Hunter put us up 3 to 0 on a sweet finish beating the goalie far post. We would finish the game 3 to 0. Thanks to Andrew for suiting up with us today and putting in a good shift in goal. And thanks to all the boys for working whistle to whistle, end to end with a terrific performance. Great fun, great result.

    Oct 23 U10 v LS Fury

    October 24th, 2010

While it is always windy at the Lee’s Summit soccer park, it was REALLY windy by the time gametime rolled around Saturday afternoon. We got the wind the first half and had some excellent early chances including hitting the crossbar and shots just going wide. We were pressuring well all over the park and Landon and Nik were keeping winning most all of their challenges.

Unfortunately we ended up having no subs with two players out and another getting injured. Fury had 10 quality field players and kept rolling whole teams out with every shift change. We gave up one goal towards the end of the first half and went into half time trailing 1 to 0.

In the second half, witha strong wind at their back and much fresher legs, Fury kept coming at us. Our boys did their best and Colby had some fantastic saves. Everyone on the pitch was giving their all and no one complained about the lack of subs – they just kept battling. It was a tough task and at the final whistle, everyone came off drained.

While it wasn’t one of our better performances of the season, due to the circumstances (including the sideline circus) I would say everyone was glad to get this game behind us and move on to next week for our final week of the season. I am so impressed with this group – these boys work so hard in practice, are playing in a tough A1 division and all year have pushed to play above and beyond my expectations week after week. I am definitely looking forward to a strong finish on Saturday and to a promising spring season. This is a great group of boys that have grown strong together. Their courage and fighting spirit in this game really made me proud.

BTW – within an hour of our game being over, the storms rolled in and the remainder of the games were canceled due to the hard rain and stormy conditions.

    10/23 U11 v Varder Blue 1 to 0

    October 24th, 2010

It was a crazy fall day with the weather. Strong winds out of the south with the storms blowing up from the south. Temperatures in the low 70′s. A few sprinkles at the start of the game. We had played to a 1 to 1 draw the last time we met. Everyone was in good spirits and it felt like we were ready to play. We took the wind the first half and off we went.

Both teams had some good chances. The boys were pressuring well today and winning more 50/50′s than usual. We had a goal disallowed on a tight offside call and then some good passing sent the ball outwide for Dylan to run onto and finish with a blazing left footed shot past the goalie and into the back of the net to give us the lead. We went in at halftime up 1 to 0 and Varder would get the wind for the second half.

After our halftime pep talk (duck sauce – Barbara Streisand and some good dancing) the boys continued to push hard and again had some good chances including a shot that the goalie bungled across the goalline before finally knocking back onto the field. We didn’t get the goal, but the boys gave it their all until the final whistle and we came away with a big win. Fantastic effort all over the pitch and I was pleased to see the hard work the boys have been doing in training is paying off. Big smiles all around.
