    May 23 U10 v Futura Varder Blue

    May 24th, 2010

Hard to believe this was already our last game of the 2010 Spring KC Metro league season. Varder Blue came into the game undefeated with no losses and their one tie with Rampage. U10 were undefeated in all competitions. We knew it would be a good game and with overcast skies and temps in the mid 80′s, the boys were excited to play.

The boys got  the game going with a good tempo and lots of possession, immediately getting some good shots off. Futura had come to play and were putting pressure on us all over the field. It was a good game all over the pitch but 305 definitely had the most opportunities as the goal seemed to shrink for this game. In the 21st minute, we found that important first goal as Hunter beat the goalie on a sizzler of a shot. 1 to 0 at half time was looking pretty good until in the 24th, the ref awarded Varder a penalty kick. Ian went the right way but the shot was well placed in the corner to make it 1 to 1. The call was fairly harsh and the boys turned up the heat on kick off taking it straight down the field, sending it out right for Alex who without hesitation slotted it into the back of the net to put us back on top in the last minute of the half, 2 to 1. WOW.

In the first half, 305 had 22 shots on goal to Futura’s 5. Their goalie made some great saves and we pounded the post and the crossbar and near misses over and around. Pretty exciting – but nothing like what was to come in the second half.

The boys were ready to step up their game and knew they were only 25 minutes away from a perfect league season. At kickoff, we took the ball down the field as a team, with good passing and pace, ended up with Tanner and he drilled a shot past the goalie to put us up 3 to1 in the first minute of play. Varder came right back with 2 unanswered goals to tie it up 3 to 3 and only 6 minutes had been played in the half. It was game on.

The boys responded like they have all season – rising to the occasion and finding that high gear that really separates them from the other teams. High tempo, quick passes, moving the ball around. Pressure, pace and possession. In  the 8th minute, Hunter put us up 4 to 3. Then a minute later, Hunter found  the net again and we were up 5 to 3. The boys continued to dominate possession moving the ball well and in the 10th minute, Riley put us up 6 to 3. With 15 minutes to go, we were up by 3, but Varder was still in the game. Ian went out with a hard knock on a great save and Dylan stepped into goal to protect our lead. The next seven minutes saw hard play all over  the pitch with both teams pressuring hard.

In the 17th, Hunter shot home the 7th goal of  the game. Varder found the net again to make it 7 to 4. With 6 minutes to go, both teams were battling hard to win tthe game. With 4 minutes left, Tanner beat the goalie with a smart finish to try to put the game away 8 to 4. The boys continued to have to play hard as Varder fought to get back in the game. It was an exciting final minutes and  when the ref blew the final whistle, 305 was on top 8 to 4. 305 had 17 shots in the 2nd half for a total of 39 shots to Varder’s 7 shots in the 2nd half -for a total of 12.

A brilliant end to an amazing league season – well done and well deserved, boys AND parents. What support throughout the game. We had our own Cauldron keeping the boys flying high throughout  the  game. I can’t imagine a better youth soccer experience. Well done everyone.

    May 22 U9 V RayPec Elite Shock

    May 23rd, 2010

It was our last game of the regular season but the first time temperatures had been above 75. Strong wind out of the south blowing across field 9a at RSC. It was great having Andrew back to play with us and  the boys were ready to go.

Nine minutes in, Trenten Leary took a through pass from Riley and smashed it past the goalie to give us the lead. Elite Shock came back to tie it up 1 to 1. Then Trenten scored his second to put us up 2 to 1. We were pretty much dominating possession but Elite got a goal to make it 2 to 2 at half time. 305 had 10 shots in the first half to Elite’s 2.

In the second half, the boys went right to work with Nick Anders making a great defensive play, moving the ball upfield and then sending Trenten through on goal to score in the first 2 minutes. It was  game on and the boys kept creating chances and most of the play was in our half. Mid way through the half, Riley took a direct kick and put it into the back of the net to put us up 4 to 2. We finished the half much like we started with Trenten and Riley teaming up in the last minute of play with a give and go and then Riley beating the goalie to make the final score 5 to 2.

305 had 8 shots to Elite’s 0 in the 2nd half for a total of 18 shots to 2. This team has really grown during the season and I am confident if we were to play any of the other teams now, we would probably win the majority of those games. It will be a  blast taking this team to the Patriot Cup.

    May 15 – KC Wizards V Fire

    May 17th, 2010

It was only supposed to be a 20%chance of Rain…..But from our usual Sedalia tailgate spot at CAB – it was 100%. We arrived about 2:30 and Lori and I got the Tent setup. The Wallens and the Goss’s arrived soon after and the boys setup the soccer tennis in the parking lot. You would have thought it was sunshine and blue sky the way the boys were enjoying themselves.

Evidently it was gourmet night and Chris Wallen grilled up his amazing Bacon wrapped shrimp and jalepeno peppers (with the seeds this time) followed by the best lamb chops on the grill I have ever had. The malbec we had was perfect with the lamb and I don’t believe there wasn anybody that was having more fun and eating better than the Sedalia 305 KC Wizards crew at CAB.

We actually watched the first half of the game under the tent via internet (slingbox box from Direct-TV at work) on Fox Soccer channel. what fun. We were cheering and singing just like we were in the Cauldron. The secondd half the Wizards were attacking the Cauldron end and me and Chris and the boys headed into the Cauldron. It was still raining hard and the second half was amazing. McBride scored 4 minute in and then it was all Wizards with Kai Kamara getting us a goal back early in the half and then tying the game in the 89th. The usual poor reffing even though it was one of MLS most experienced refs… The boys lead the Cauldron in a round of “A rope, A tree…..” Classic.

Another day of soccer in the rain. Just doesn’t get much better than this.

    May 15 U10 v Futura Varder White

    May 17th, 2010

It was back to Tiffany Springs via the detour and even though the forecast was a 20% chance of rain, it was going to rain all day. It was just a steady rain with hardly any wind. We at least had corner flags this time but still the same small  goals. Evidently there was a lock-in or sleepover the night  before and we seemed sluggish at best.

We faced a team that were highly skilled and determined to beat us. They played more like Sedala 305 then we did initially. Lots of pressure on the ball and our players. And within 10 minutes, we were down 1 to 0. The boys were moving the ball around and we were having plenty of opportunities. They moved to 3 defenders and their goalie was the best we have seen all year. With two minutes to go in the half, Tanner got off a shot that skipped on the wet pitch and slipped through the keepers hands into the goal. We went into half tied 1 to 1 which showed how hard the boys worked to get back into the game. We had 12 shots to their 6  shots.

In the second half, we opened up the game a bit more and started to dominate possession. Our passing improved and we were handling the constant pressure better. Everyone knew we needed an early goal and was working hard to get it. Four minutes in, Hunter was able to beat the goalie and put us up 1 to 2. We had several more opportunities and with ten minutes to go, Riley beat the goalie with a shot off the near post and put us up 1 to 3 with  the winning goal. We had 21 shots in the second half to Varder’s 4. 305 had a total of 33 shots for the game, so pretty much our average to Varder’s 10.

Looking at our soaking wet boys after the game and  their dour faces, you would have thought we had lost. I told them – news flash – you boys just beat one of the better clubs in KC! But they had worked hard and were frustrated with hard they had to work to win. In the end, a job well done as we stuck to our game and in spite of the pressure from Varder (and their amazing goalie) fought for the win.

Hats off to the official that had to call the game on his own. He did an excellent job and it was one of our best officiated games of the season. I guess old school still rules.

    May 8 U10 v Lee's Summit Fire

    May 10th, 2010

We had a 2:30 start time at Lee’s Summit field 6. What a nice, big soccer complex. Field six is a long haul from the parking lot and the fields run north and south so it would be a strong wind from the north blowing downhill. We would be going up hill and against the wind the first half. But that didn’t seem to matter to the boys.

We started out strong intercepting their kick off going up the field and getting a shot off followed by a smashing shot from Trenton Willis to put us up 1 to 0 in the first half. The boys took control of the ball and we had most of the possession with Hunter finding the back of the net 10 minutes in to put us up 2 to 0. One minute later, Hunter scored again and it was 3 to 0. LS Fire got a goal back when our clearance bounced off one of their players and ended up in the back of our goal. With about 7 minutes to go, it was time for our U9 bomb squad to have a go and Riley put Trenten Leary through and Trenten beat the goalie to put us up 4 to 1 going into half. In the first half 305 had 22 shots on goal and LS Fire had 9.

For the second half we would be going downhill with the wind at our back. The boys were having fun and it was game on. Trenton Willis started the second half much like the first with a first strike off a rebound pounding the ball into the back of the net in the second minute of play. Three minutes later, Tanner followed with a nice run ending with a blast from just outside the box. Feeling the love, he came back a minute later and did almost the same thing with a nice run and another blast to put us up 7 to 1. At this point we were rolling over LS Fire with literally all the possession. There was not a lot of “love” coming from their parents and they were really hounding the refs and our players. I think this “fired” the boys up even more.

Riley went into the goal for Ian. Trenten Willis completed his hat trick in the ninth minute. Hunter put us up 9 to 1 with 8 minutes to go on a brilliant run down the left wing and super pass from Trenten Leary. Two minutes later Hunter hit home his 4th goal of the game on a long pass from Riley from outside his goalie box to make it 10 to 1. And with a minute to go, Zachary scored at the end of a beautiful 3 touch possession. So we ended up on top 11 to 1. 305 had 18 shots for a total of 40 for the game (wow) to LS Fire with 2 shots in the second half for a total of 11 for the game.
