    4/24 – KC Wizards v Galaxy

    April 26th, 2010

After U9 and U10 played Saturday morning in the rain, we headed to Community America Ballpark for a tailgate (in the rain) before the Wizards played the undefeated LA Galaxy. We had a great turnout and the boys (and the parents) had a blast. Chris Wallen had scored a monster grill  that Mark Esquivel hauled up in his truck and HA brought what must have been hundreds of basket taco’s (or that basket didn’t have a bottom) and Mark Ciersdorff showed up with a van load of tops. So we were eating well, staying dry and having fun. Lori made a stadium birthday cake in honor of all the April Birthdays, Dylan Hayden, Hunter Gilliam, Maelin Moore, Owen Vannoy and Ian Wallen. Laura had hooked the kids up with Human tunnel passes and we all had a great time at the game with the Wizards outplaying the Galaxy but having the only goal of the game called back on another horrible call (ok – so I have seen the replay of this now and Kai amazingly did miss the ball and try to push it in. Where we sat on the lawn in the first half – it looked like the ball was across and he bungled in with it.). So 0 to 0. Can’t wait until the next game!

    U9 4/24 v Harambe 3 to 5

    April 26th, 2010

U9 played at 1:15 at RSC 9a with the wind died down and a steady rain still falling. We were playing Harambe for the second time this season and they had shut us out in the previous match. Just like U10, we had not practiced since Monday. I was wanting to implement a new system – go to a 2-1-2 instead of our usual 1-3-1. We hadn’t practiced it, but we needed to mix things up. Five minutes into the game it paid off and we were up 1 to 0 with a great goal from Trenten Leary. Harambe responded and put in the equalizer just one minute later. 1 to 1 and it was game on. Harambe went one up. There was some good play up and down the field with both teams having some good chances. Harambe scored again to go up 1 to 3.  With 10 minutes to go, Riley and Trenten had a nice give and go and Trenten scored his second to get us back within a goal, 2 – 3. Just before half, Harambe scored another to go up 2 to 4 at half. It is these lapses that we have had all season that seem to keep pushing that “W’ just out of our reach. Colby had another great half in goal and overall we had improved a lot since our last game with Harambe.

We came out strong in the second half, staying more focused and working hard all over  the pitch. Both teams had some good chances but could only manage a goal a piece. Trenten completed his hat trick for the game and Hayden Martin came in for Colby in goal and held Harambe to just the one. So second half we played even 1 to 1 and found ourselves looking like a team on the end of a 3 to 5 loss. It may sound funny, but it was “job well done”!! The boys worked hard and other than a couple lapses to concede goals, the second half we really played well.

    U10 4/24 v Rampage 8 to 5

    April 26th, 2010

It was a “proper day for footy” with a steady rain and winds out of the south. We were at RSC on field 9A and playing a good Rampage team. As has been our approach all season, the boys jumped out with an early goal from Hunter in  the first minute of play. We only had practice on Monday and it showed as we were a step slow and not quite on our game with passes being a litte late or off the mark. Tanner put us up 2-0 in the 6th minute and then the game was up and down the field. Hunter found  the net again in the 16th. Rampage got one back and then Tanner scored our 4th of the half followed by another Rampage goal. Hunter scored right before half to put us up 5 to 2 at half.

Rampage came out strong in the second half and we came out flat as we gave up 15 shots in the second half compared to only 8 in the first. Rampage scored two goals to get back into the game 5 to 4 before we finally got our first goal of the second half with eight minutes to go with Hunter having a great finish after several passes starting at the back after Trenton Willis disposessed their forward. Two minutes later Tanner worked the ball into the box and finished with a strong shot into the back of the net. Rampage got one more to make it 7 to 5 and then with just over a minute to go, Zachary Morrison finished from the left to put the game way 8 to5.

    April 17, U10 v FFC Celtic

    April 18th, 2010

Our day of soccer continued on Saturday afternoon (low 60,s, blue sky), with a journey out to Tiffany Springs to play the Futura Celtic united team. The bridge to the park was out, so we ended up following some not so clear detour but everyone made it in time for the  game. But what seems to be a normal occurence whenever we venture to Tiffany to play, the unexpected should be expected. The game was a 3:00 start at 3:15, still no refs, no corner flags. At 3;20 refs showed up, but no corner flags. We finally got the game started. I tried to get the boys pumped up and reminded them this was the team that had us play in a white out, then called the game a few minutes into the second half so they could get a draw. The boys were pumped. Celtic kicked off and we pressured, stole the ball, passed down the wing and Tanner layed a nice through ball to Hunter who was 1 on1 with the goalie. And the ref that was 20 minutes late blew offsides. But of course, there are no offsides in U10…. Welcome to Futura soccer and Tiffany Springs.

The boys dominated possession with Celtic only getting the ball past half field on Goalie punts. Lots of passing, Excellent skills work. Controlling the ball. The ball was wide more than central. Everyone was having fun and playing hard. At half time, we had a decisive 7 to 0 lead with Hunter netting 3, Tanner 1, Trenten Willis 2 and Trenten Leary netting the 7th goal of the half.

The second half saw us playing into the wind, but it didn’t matter as we continued to control the  game. Hunter put in 2 more goals, Tanner had 1 more before he went into goal, and Trenten Willis was on f ire with 2 more goals and Trenten Leary also added 2. Riley finished another  terrific run of passes that started at the back with Zachary and 4 passes later ended up in the box for Riley to finish.

With a final score of 15 to 0, on a beautiful bluebird day, it seemed a long way from that snowy day on April 4, 2009. And it felt good. Really  good! Great work boys.

    April 17, U9 v FFC Parma

    April 18th, 2010

It was our second meeting with FFC Parma playing at Raytown 9B, immediately following the 9:30 U10 game. The boys were looking for their first win and came out strong. With 14 shots in the first half, it looked like something would fall, but we ended up down 1 goal at the half. We are definitely improving and the boys looked good throughout the half. Nick and Colby were keeping things shut down at the back and for the first time this season, U9 was putting together some good passes and penetrating the penalty box.

In the second half, we seemed to run out of steam a bit,  but kept the pressure up with 8 more clear chances. We just were not getting into the box as much the second half and play was getting stuck in the middle third. A great effort once again, but Parma scored another in the second half and the game ended in a 2 to 0 loss.

We are definitely improving and the boys worked really hard. Just need to start finishing. As a reminder, this past fall, the U10 team went through a similar phase. Consistently out shooting the opposition, putting together solid possession, but not hitting the net. While  this was a tough learning period, their persistence paid off with the U10 team now enjoying the rewards of  their determination and hard work with a much improved season so far this spring. And a shout out to all the U10 players and parents that stayed and cheered the U9 team on. That was terrific having that extra support.
